Art in the Junior School
Art at Key Stage 1 is taught through cross-curricular topic work. Children are encouraged to express their feelings and ideas freely. This is balanced with a structured teaching in the use of a range of different materials, simple working methods and an introduction to basic elements of Art and Design. We aim to enable the children to produce work which gives them both enjoyment and satisfaction and which reaches a level appropriate to their ability.Activities include drawing from observation and imagination, Painting, mixing from primary colours, collage, simple printmaking, 3D work, looking at the work of other artists, designers and craftspeople. The children build on techniques experienced at Key Stage 1 to develop their work at Key Stage 2. These core areas are extended in more depth and with a growing emphasis on developing the accompanying technical skills.Appreciation of the works of particular artist relevant to the projects in hand plays a larger role, with the possibility of an emerging awareness of some main aspects in Art History. Thus, having built on both the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 foundations, the children are prepared to make the transition to the Senior School Art Department with more confidence and developing skills. For further information please contact
