Go up a level

Drama is a subject that should both contribute to, and take from, other areas of the curriculum – It has no
boundaries and enables every child to achieve where other subjects may fail! Drama should encourage all
pupils to take part, to develop the ability to interact positively with others and to gain an understanding and
awareness of themselves. Drama is not to be confused with play, as the children are expected to exert self-
discipline at all times, but is to be promoted as another real learning opportunity. It is not necessarily
solely about ‘ acting’ and ‘audience’ but encompasses role-play, movement and dance appreciation, some
instructions in stagecraft, staging and dramatic theory, actions, songs and poems and the presentation of
 their ideas.

Aims and Objectives
  • To enable all pupils to express themselves through drama in trustworthy situations.
  • To instil in them a practical awareness of others.
  • To foster self-confidence in our pupils.

In order for these aims to be achieved, it is necessary that:

  1. Drama lessons are not confused with speaking and listening sessions, nor do concert or play rehearsals and suchlike absorb them.
  2. Adequate space and facilities are provided for these lessons.
  3. Staff must be prepared to do anything they ask of the pupils. (Teacher-in Role).
  4. The sessions are occasions for praise and celebration of pupils’ contribution although genuine feedback and regular self-assessment are important.

"Pupils should be given the opportunity to participate in a wide range, e.g. drama activities including role-
play, improvisation, writing of scripts etc. In response to drama, pupils should be encouraged to evaluate their
own and others’ contribution." (English National Curriculum KS2)
