Music Curriculum StatementMusic is a fundamental part of all our lives and culture and all children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that foster creative and listening skills. The curriculum followed at St Dunstan’s Junior School is based on the National Curriculum guidelines and whenever possible cross-curricular links will be established and developed. Practical music making is a priority and there is access to ICT for composing and music games. The overall aim of the curriculum is to promote enjoyment of all music and to lay a foundation for lifelong learning. Music in the Pre PrepReception to Year 2All children have two lessons a week and enjoy making music using a variety of instruments developing their coordination and listening skills. Singing has a high profile and songs are often linked to their topics and other areas of the curriculum. Music in the PrepYears 3 to Year 6Year 3 Children have one class lesson a week where they compose and sing and one group instrumental lesson where they have the opportunity to learn a brass ,string or woodwind instrument. Year 4 Children have one class lesson as in year 3 and a year group lesson which focuses on listening and musicianship skills. Year 5 and Year 6 All children have two lessons a week which encompass composing, listening and appraising using a range of instruments and mediums. Extra curricular activities Opportunities currently available are Choir, Chamber choir, recorders, percussion and orchestra.
