Junior School Science
In the Reception classes Science is taught as part of the children’s topic work.
From Year 1 Science is taught as a separate subject, with Years 1 and 2 having one
afternoon a week devoted to the subject.
In Years 3 and 4 there are three timetabled Science lessons each week and in Years 5 and
6 to there are four. All children have homework once a week.
The work is organised into topic blocks, enabling the children to cover work on plants,
animals, environments, changes, ourselves and forces (amongst other topics) during the
school year.
The Science work in the Junior School has a practical focus, ensuring that the pupils have
a good understanding of the basics of investigative work, and an enjoyable time in their
Science lessons. The work covered is related, as far as possible, to their everyday
experiences and familiar situations and there are links to other subjects in the curriculum.
From Reception to Year 6 the children are working on developing their observing,
predicting, recording and analysing skills in their Science lessons.
In the future you will be able to see some of the activities that the pupils have been taking
part in during their Science lessons.
