Prep Science Club
As part of our studies into digestion we thought it would be a good idea to mimic the action of the stomach. After getting together the ingredients for a tasty meal (biscuits, peas and diced carrots) we added them into a large beaker containing enough vinegar to give a pretty good impression of the acidic conditions in the stomach. A good stir round was all that was needed to mix the contents. The really foul part came next as we poured in some milk and then added some rennet, an enzyme that will cause milk to coagulate. This made the appearance and texture of the contents of the beaker much more like chyme, the scientific term for the contents of the stomach. The Science Club learned plenty of scientific vocabulary during this activity, but they felt that the most valuable lesson was how to make fake vomit to fool parents into keeping them off school.
