The Armstrong Society at St. Dunstan's College

Lecture Programmes

Origins

The Armstrong Society is the Sixth Form Science Society and is one of the longest running societies at the College. It was formed just after the Second World War to cater for the interests of those studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The name of the Society commemorates Dr Edward Frankland Armstrong FRS and his father Professor Sir Henry Edward Armstrong FRS, both governors of the College and who lived in Catford. Professor Armstrong was a notable pioneer in science education, who proposed many innovative teaching ideas. He was closely involved with St Dunstan's College at the turn of the century when, in conjunction with the Headmaster at the time Mr C. M. Stuart, he was one of the first to propose and develop the heuristic method of science teaching.

Meetings

This year, lectures will be held on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. Wednesday and Thursday lectures begin at 6.00 pm and those held on Fridays at 4.00 pm. The annual lecture programme consists of about eight lectures during the Michaelmas and Lent terms. Lectures commence at 4.00 pm, with 15 - 20 minutes for questions at about 4.45 pm. In the last few years pupils from the Middle School (and occasionally some from the Lower School) have also been welcomed to our meetings. Parents of pupils and other interested adults are also welcome to attend.

The Society tries to align its meetings with important national events, for example the biennial Chemistry Week, and annual National Science Week. National Science Week 2006 will include the Armstrong Society Annual Dinner with an invited eminent guest speaker.

Directions

A map showing the position of the College is available here.

St Dunstan's College can be found on the South Circular (A205), just west of its intersection with the A21 (the route from central London to Bromley). Both Catford and Catford Bridge railway stations (both 20 minutes from London termini) are less than five minutes walk from the College. Friday afternoons see an enormous volume of traffic on the A205 so, if at all possible, use the railway in preference to driving or leave much more time than you would anticipate for the journey.

Contact the Armstrong Society Chairman if you would like more help with transport or directions.

Audio-Visual Equipment

The following audio-visual equipment is available for the use of speakers:

  • Carousel projector
  • Overhead projector
  • Computer projector (VGA resolution)
  • Video projector (VHS and BetaMax)
  • Tape recorder

Please would speakers let the Society Chairman know which of these they would like to use.

Expenses

The Armstrong Society will be pleased to reimburse the reasonable travelling expenses of speakers. It is, however, unable to meet any other fees arising from Society lectures.
