YEAR 7 GENERAL SCHEME OF WORK: ART
Establishing Good Practice
The purpose of the year's work is primarily to establish good practice, within the Art studio, as well as laying the foundation for a working understanding of the formal elements of Art and Design. The following is not intended to be totally prescriptive.
Theme: Choose a particular Theme to facilitate an in-depth study. Use artifacts etc. and establish an environment or still-life display. In this case, Organic Forms is used as a vehicle.
Begin with direct observational drawings of artifacts/still-life display.
USE critical studies worksheets
MAKE cardboard relief Islamic plates
VISIT Horniman Museum
DESIGN Organic drawings: positive and negative
EXPERIMENT with tessellations: lino/string/mono prints
Alongside this experiential work every pupil will:

1. Make their own A1 folder; take responsibility for their own work and should at the end of each term fill in a self-assessment sheet, on the cover, throughout their KS3 studies.

2. Copy " A Guide to Objective Drawing." into sketchbooks.

3. Discuss, reflect on and write about "What is Art?" As an on-going task make and decorate personal books, from A3 paper, which explain what they think Art is. Begin looking at/discussing examples from the history of Art. Develop Time lines within each Art studio. Encourage looking at a "Picture of the Week". In terms of Organic shapes, reference to Matisse; Cézanne; ; The Orientalists; Sothebys; Liberty; Interior Design would be a starting point. Begin individual glossaries.

4. Experiment with Colour theory. Colour mixing and clearing up. Primary/secondary; complementary. Colour triangle. Colour as symbol. Refer to eg Gaugin, Van Gogh, Seurat, Klee.

Whole class projects

A Concertina individual colour wash exercises into big fans.

B Make a wall display. A good opportunity to include self-portraits within the carpet tile designs. NB Pupils should attempt a self-portrait for each year of KS3, but not necessarily within the same medium.

Card Weaving
As a development of colour exercises, guillotine strips of decorated card and weave together.
Design 3D containers/vessels
Weave a 3D container from a cardboard base. Shape of base? Colour, pattern, object (pot, vase, container, lid, spout, handles)? DRAW ALL STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION. Record (word process) and evaluate. The finished objects could be further developed in wire, next year. Contextual reference to the following would be useful: David Drew; Lois Walpole; V & A Ceramics; Picasso et al.
Homework
Half-termly in advance - wherever possible. Mark in class and use homework marks as a basis for writing profiles. Encourage a range of homeworks to include: finding; research; 3D work and lots of direct observational drawing. Towards the end of the year, encourage homeworks to include some subjective work eg fantasy backgrounds for objective foregrounds.
Focus: The St Dunstan’s College Environment
Reportage drawing of aspects of the St Dunstan’s environment. Consider
Inside Man Big Old + Landscape
Outside Nature Small New - Architecture
This is intended as a summer term activity to allow working outside while the GCSE/GCE exhibitions are organised inside. It also provides an opportunity to dovetail with the Year 7. A whole class development could be the production of a calendar for commercial sale at Christmas.
End of Year test to include:
Timed objective drawing exercise; glossary work and Art History reference.

Summer Holidays
All classes should be encouraged to visit museums buy a postcard and on the back write a personal comment on a particular piece of work which impresses them and hand in to their teacher at the beginning of the Michaelmas term. Commendations should awarded to pupils who successfully complete this task.
