Aims of the Biology Department

1. Our aims are to ensure that all our pupils:
  • follow a Biology course that covers a broad and balanced range of topics within the subject, aligned to but broader than the National Curriculum for Science, Sc1 and Sc2.
  • realise their intellectual potential in this subject, developing skills appropriate to their abilities.
  • achieve appropriate qualifications in the subject at GCSE ( and, when relevant, at A level), facilitating access to higher education or a chosen career.
  • receive an education in this subject which is relevant to the adult world of work; and which promotes a healthy, active lifestyle.

2. We aim to:
  • provide a worthwhile educational experience for all pupils, through a series of well-designed studies of experimental, investigative and theoretical biology; and thus create and sustain pupils' interest in, and enjoyment of, science in general and biology in particular.
  • provide a body of knowledge appropriate at each age group for pupils who will not be going on to study biology further; and for pupils continuing in further studies in biological sciences.
  • enable pupils to acquire biological knowledge, and to understand scientific patterns and models in biology.
  • encourage pupils to apply their biological knowledge and scientific understanding to familiar and unfamiliar situations, linking practical and theoretical aspects.
  • make pupils aware of the usefulness, and the limitations, of scientific method; and help them appreciate the applicability of scientific method in other disciplines and in everyday life.
  • make pupils aware of the importance to scientific method of accurate experimental work; develop their abilities to perform experiments, having due regard for safety; develop their skills of observation and their ability to record and interpret these observations; and develop their skills of hypothesis formation and their ability to design experiments to test these hypotheses.
  • develop the abilities of pupils to organise, manipulate, interpret and evaluate data, as part of problem-solving and decision-making processes in the field of biology.
  • develop the abilities of pupils to communicate in appropriate ways.
  • develop pupils' appreciation of the social, economic, environmental and technological contributions and applications of biology.
  • encourage pupils to relate biology and its applications to the world around them; and make them aware that the applications of biology may be either beneficial or detrimental to the individual, the community and the environment.
  • make pupils aware that the concepts of biology are constantly developing.
