Alchemy is the St Dunstan's College Chemistry Club for those in Years 8 and 9. It meets every Thursday at 1.30 pm in Room 254 (Chemistry Laboratory C1), to have fun with Chemistry and prepare for various local and national competitions. Early lunch passes may be obtained from Dr Miller.
Here are some of Alchemy's past and present activities:
- The Salters' Festivals of Chemistry in 1996 (we reached the National Final), 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002 (we won the Egg Race at the University of Brighton).
- The National Crystal Growing Competition organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry. We came second in the regional heat in 1999 and won the National Final in 2000.
- In 2001 Year 9 members of Alchemy are using their club project work as a contribution towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Projects include "Making the biggest flour bomb", "Making the most powerful exploding balloon", chromatography and crystal growing.
- In 2001 Year 9 members of Alchemy (together with pupils from Years 10 and 11) entered the Royal Society of Chemistry's Top of the Bench competition.
