Duke of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme is thriving at St Dunstan's College
with more and more pupils getting involved each year.

If you would like to sign up then please see Mrs Hunt or Mr Gordon for even more information.

The Award Scheme flourishes at St Dunstan’s, with more than half the students in some year groups involved. Full details of the aims of the Award and requirements for completion can be found on the Award website.
The Bronze Award is introduced in Year Nine, where the Award is now mainly followed via the Combined Cadet Force. Fewer students attempt Silver, as many prefer to concentrate on examinations in years 10 and 11, but here again numbers are healthy and success is growing under Patsy Hunt's leadership.
The Gold Award can be attempted once pupils reach the age of sixteen, with approximately 30 students in the current Lower Sixth. Completing the Award at this level presents a real challenge, and not all achieve it by the time they leave the College, but many go on to finish the course while at University. Mr Gordon oversees the Award at this level, as well as acting as Award Officer for the whole College. Successful participants receive an invitation to one of the London Palaces, and are usually lucky enough to meet the Duke of Edinburgh himself.
It has become a tradition for Heads of School to achieve the Award by the time they leave the College!

Statistics for London Independent Schools (note that these do not include schools which follow the Award through Local Authorities):

During the recording year April 01 to March 02 St Dunstan’s:
  • gained more Bronze Awards than any other school
  • came fifth in the number of Silver Awards gained
  • came third in the number of Gold Awards gained, after Harrow and John Lyon Schools. We had one Award more than St Paul’s Girls.
  • Overall we gained 64 Awards at all levels, placing us second to Harrow School’s 71.
This is a superb record and is a tribute not only to our Students, who follow the programmes entirely in their free time, but also to the staff who give their own time to this activity.
Last year saw a great effort from some of the other top schools and we slipped slightly in the table. At Gold Level we were fourth after Harrow, St Paul's Girls and John Lyon schools. Nonetheless, our 67 Awards overall placed us third in London after Harrow School and St Paul's Girls.
