Using ICT in English

A short guide for sixth-formers

What follows is advice on how best to use ICT to help you in your AS and A2 courses in English Literature. This is not designed to be gospel, rather a series of suggestions.

1. Presentation

When you submit coursework you are strongly advised to word-process this work. It will make the drafting process much easier and will enhance the presentation and readability of your work.

You are advised to use a clear font such as Times New Roman. This should be no larger than .12. It is also a good idea to set the line spacing at 1½. You can do this by clicking on format, then selecting paragraph, then selecting line-spacing at 1.5. You will need to highlight the text first.

At the end of your essay you should include a Works Cited. Here you should list the editions of the primary texts and any critical texts you have referred to or consulted. These should take the following form:

Shakespeare, Hamlet, Ed. Jenkins (London, 1982)

Amis, Martin, The War Against Cliché (London, 2001)

Ask your teacher for further clarification.

2. Research

You are strongly advised to use the internet for research purposes. However, be warned that there is little quality control on the internet so do not assume that just because something is on the web then it is necessarily good. You will also have to be very selective.

If you want good ideas for websites, have a look at Using the Web in English.

Please let your teachers know if you find any other useful sites, especially those which might be text-specific.

Good luck with the research!
