The European Computer Driving Licence

The European Computer Driving Licence is a baseline qualification in ICT competency. It is a qualification whose popularity has risen enormously since we adopted it - it is currently used by many companies and organisations (such as the NHS, IBM, the MoD, the Bank of England) as a credible measure of ICT competency for their employees. More recently, and as we predicted, it has begun to establish a larger presence in the education sector.

The ECDL consists of seven module tests, which all have to be passed before the licence can be awarded.

  1. Basic Concepts of ICT
  2. File Management
  3. Word Processing
  4. Spreadsheets
  5. Databases
  6. Presentation
  7. Internet & Communication

The modules are taught and tested using Microsoft Office applications - Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

From January 2003, with the qualification being overseen by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), the ECDL will be accorded the same status as a GCSE. This makes it a valuable addition to the qualifications of all of our students.

The College is an accredited private testing centre for the ECDL. Up to date ECDL test results are available here for Year 9, Year 13 and Staff.

For more details on the qualification, visit either the British Computer Society ECDL website or the ECDL Foundation website.
