International Baccalaureate Physics

The course aims to develop an understanding of physics in terms of theory, practice and in collaboration with other sciences. Physics is considered to be close to both mathematics and philosophy and exploits them in the development of new theories. The course therefore links well with two compulsory parts of IB, TOK and Mathematics.

Each topic incorporates investigations, most of which are assessed and contribute towards the internal assessment mark.The option topics to be studied by each group will be negotiated with the teacher, based on specific interests and links with other subjects.

Internal assessment is based on practical work and projects untertaken during the course. Examinations are held towards the end of Y13.

Topics studied in Lower Sixth include: Electric fields and circuits, Force and motion, Gravitation, Astrophysics, Waves. In Upper Sixth, the remaining core topics are: Thermal physics, Atomic and nuclear physics. In addition, one further option topic is negotiated with students.
