PSHE Links
Junior School PSHE
The PSHE course for pupils in Years 3 – 6, implemented in September 1999, is designed to lead pupils into a greater awareness of themselves and others. Many of the issues covered at Key Stage 2 lead into the topics dealt with in the Senior School.
Moral and spiritual values
Through PSHE pupils are encouraged to see their own worth and contribution as individuals as well as their place in the wider community. The influences to which they are subject through the values exhibited by parts of the media in particular may well be at odds with some of the more selfless attitudes we would wish them to consider. PSHE plays a role in challenging assumptions and offering alternatives.
Drugs policy, Sex Education policy, Bullying policy
PSHE courses follow these policy documents in each of the year groups to which they apply.
Pastoral system
Support, guidance and pupils' welfare are integral to personal and social development. Inevitably some pupils need more support than others. Subject teachers, tutors and Heads of Year need to be attuned to particular circumstances which may affect a pupil's welfare.
Individual subject areas with strong PSHE links include:
English
The English Department deals with a large number of PSHE issues, particularly in teaching literature but also through presentation of arguments and topical issues that have a human bearing.
Drama
Interpersonal skills and issues are brought out through this subject.
RS
Specific moral issues arise within the syllabus; other cultures and beliefs are studied, putting our own into focus.
Science
There are considerable cross-curricular links with Biology as we cover smoking, alcohol and other drugs, AIDS and Sex Education; safety issues are covered in all three sciences.
History
Attitudes and experiences from the past are examined, as are different cultures.
Careers
There is a careers input within the PSHE programme:
-
In Year 10 Pupils write their own CV through ICT as part of the PSHE carousel.
-
In Year 11 in preparation for work experience, Health and Safety issues are dealt with as part of the carousel. Tutors follow through a Careers scheme in extended registration time.
