Text Box: Spanish is a popular modern language option available from Year 8 onwards. The Department promotes a practical approach to learning the language. The focus is on topics that are interesting and relevant to everyday life. Lessons for all year groups are lively, fun and interactive and give equal weight to speaking, listening, reading and writing.
In Year 8 there is a heavy emphasis on communications skills. This is designed to develop confidence. During study for GCSE level Spanish we tackle exciting topics in a stimulating way and encourage students to take part in class discussion and build their confidence for the oral element of the exam. Year 11 students, in the final year of their GCSE course, also work in small groups with the Foreign Language Assistant to practice oral skills and learn more about Spanish culture. Years 9, 10 and 11 have the opportunity to participate in our ever popular cultural visits to Spanish cities.
As well as having individual tuition once a week with the Language Assistant, A Level students attend lectures and conferences outside the College regularly. These, and a study visit abroad, support and enhance their formal coursework and help greatly in preparing them for the examination.
